Asking about suicide and supporting someone experiencing these thoughts can feel scary. In order to support someone else, it’s equally important to make sure you feel supported yourself.
Here are some ways to support yourself before taking the first step of #BeThe1To:
Do your homework: Review the #BeThe1To steps.
Get comfortable asking about suicide: Practice checking in with someone and asking them how they’re really feeling.
Take your emotional pulse: Check in on your own emotions and give yourself permission to feel them.
Care for yourself: Participate in activities that help you relax and release stress. Reach out to people who care about you.
Set boundaries: Identify what you are and are not able to do to support this individual and identify alternative supports if needed.
Find allies: Who could assist you in supporting this person? Reach out and collaborate together on being there for them.
Be kind to yourself: You might not have all the answers but remind yourself that just by being there, you are helping to create a safer space for this person.
Get some professional support: Consider calling the 988 Lifeline to talk through the situation and obtain additional guidance.
Do what you can: It’s normal to second guess whether you did enough, or too much, or did the wrong thing. Notice these feelings and remind yourself that if you follow the 5 steps, you are doing enough.
Here are some ways to support yourself after taking the first step of #BeThe1To:
Keep talking about how you feel: Make sure to identify those people who you trust and can talk to when you are feeling sad, upset, or stressed. Take some time to connect with someone to talk about how it felt to help someone in crisis.
Know your limits! Continue to be clear about what you are able and unable to do. What does your support for this person look like moving forward? What will it not include? Know your limits and what is inside and outside of your control.
You do not have to do it alone: Helping someone often takes a team. Who else can also support this individual?
You matter too! You can’t pour from an empty cup. Take time to care for yourself. Practice a hobby you enjoy, spend time with loved ones, practice gratitude on a daily basis, and remember to check-in on your physical needs.
988 is here for you: The 988 Lifeline is for anyone who’s going through a tough time. Remember you can call, chat, or text for your own needs during this time. The 988 Lifeline can also provide referrals for local professional supports.
